A gaunt, disheveled scarecrow
Diving into trash cans
In search of food or who knows what
The ill-fitting pants
Sliding down his hips
Exposing the entirety
Of his backside
Unaware
Of the cold and the stares
He stands and turns
With hawk-like gaze
Toward a cigarette butt
Wedged between
Two slabs of sidewalk
He pounces on this treasure
His actions so beastlike
I wonder whether
He can even speak
It's heartbreaking -
A crow displays more dignity
When it picks at dead things
On the road
