Pick someone - a friend, a colleague, a contact, a neighbor, a family member - and send them a little note, electronic or otherwise. Keep your message short and direct. They'll appreciate it. Maybe they'll even write back to you.
2. Take A Walk
Our bodies were made to be used. When we sit around too much, we become weak and sick and depressed. Go for a little walk. Don't hurry; enjoy yourself. Take a friend along. They could probably use some exercise, too.
3. Listen To Some Music
Play some music that you enjoy, something new or something that you liked years ago. It doesn't matter. Music will change your mood, which for most of us most of the time means that it IMPROVES your mood. Enjoy the precious gift of sonic stimulation.
4. Make A Short List Of Places To See
Jot down some places that you'd like to visit one day. It can be a short list. For example: The Grand Canyon and New York City.
Write your list on paper or send yourself an email. Next step: think about when and how you're going to get there. Ah! A list is just a list, but a plan can turn that list into a reality.
5. Give Someone A Compliment
Giving someone a compliment is the easiest thing in the world and if feels like one of the best rewards that you could ever imagine. It will make you feel good, too.
6. Thank Someone
Thanks someone who helped you, someone who was there for you when you went through a difficult time. Tell them how much it meant to you that they stood by you when you needed them. They might not realize how important that experience was in your life, but I bet that they'll be thrilled to hear it.
7. Talk To An Older Person
Older people have a lifetime of stories and adventures and wise perspectives to share. Sadly, people don't often ask them to talk about their lives, so they keep everything bottle up inside. Most older people are thrilled to share a few stories when given the chance. You'll make their day if you ask, and they just might make yours, too.
8. Create Something
A theology professor once presented the idea that if we are created in the image of a Creator, then creating is the most spiritual thing that we can do. I never forgot that. It was one of those moments that hits you across the head like a 2-by-4 of joyous revelation.
You might not think of yourself as being creative, but everyone is creative in their own way.
Don't get hung up trying to make something fancy or spectacular. Nobody cares about spectacular. The key is to be original, to express your own thoughts and tastes.
Here are some quick ideas: Write a nice card to your husband or wife. Put together a unique floral arrangement for a friend. Cook something that you've never tried before. Doodle. Paint. Do something with materials that you have lying around. Write a verse that rhymes, or a verse that doesn't rhyme. Who cares if it rhymes if it says what you want it to say?
