She asked me if I would enjoy having her prepare a meal for me sometime.
This sounded like a lot of work, and I didn't want her to go to all that trouble. I said, "Ça n'est pas nécessaire." (That's not necessary.)
I'll never forget her reply. "Rien n'est nécessaire." (Nothing is necessary.)
My mind did a virtual back flip as I recognized the wisdom in this simple statement.
We do nice things for people because we want to, not because it's demanded or expected. We give of ourselves because it is rewarding to do so. It's never a chore or a duty to do something for someone for whom you care. It's an expression of love. It's pure and mutually enjoyable.
I accepted her invitation. We worked on the dinner together and had a wonderful time.
I remember the statement often: Rien n'est nécessaire. Do what you do because you want to, because you love to do it, or because you love the other person. That's the finest motivation in the universe. What a gift it is to bring love and happiness into someone's life through our actions!
