New York Minute 123 - Shopping Cart Logistics

Late on a recent chilly evening, I descended to the track level of one of the larger Midtown subway stations. The benches on the platform were full of homeless people escaping the cold weather. Three of them had shopping carts to carry their belongings.

It’s not unusual to see homeless people pushing shopping carts in the street, but I was surprised to see so many carts on a subway platform that’s accessible only via multiple flights of stairs. It must have been a struggle to get those carts down there, but getting them back out would be far more challenging. I guess that when the alternatives are getting robbed or freezing to death, the less fortunate do what they have to do.
