New York Minute 98 - Fire Alarm

There’s nothing quite like turning the corner onto your street and seeing several fire trucks lined up in front of your building. My first thought was, “When was the last time that I backed up my computer files?”

I knew that no one was home at the time, so I didn’t worry about my significant other. My second thought was, “Should I call her now or wait until I know how serious it is?”

For an instant, I adopted a hopeful attitude. “Maybe it’s not us. Maybe it’s the building across the street.” That hope faded when I saw firemen filing into the lobby in their coats and helmets with their tools and lengths of hose strapped to their bodies.

Luckily, it was a false alarm this time. Someone burned something in their microwave oven and panicked before they realized that the flames weren’t spreading. But it’s a sobering reminder as to how quickly your life can change. We have had fires, in our building before, real ones that did extensive damage. It’s considerably more disconcerting to see the fire trucks pulling up as you look down from your apartment windows.

As the smoke cleared, proverbial and actual, and New York’s Bravest filed back out of the building, the s.o. made her way home and saw the trucks outside. Lesson learned: I should have called her.

New York Minute 97 - Tension

Despite its heightened pace, life in New York City is orderly and surprisingly relaxed most of the time. People go about their business and make an honest effort to stay out of each other’s way, which helps to keep things running smoothly. Staying out of the way is a basic survival skill in New York; most people have learned to do it automatically.

But there are days when tensions run high, and people all over town seem to be on the verge of turning on each other. I don’t understand what triggers this. It’s not necessarily tied to an event or a policy decision, although I do notice higher tension when protests or marches occur. People just seem to be on edge.

Today is one of those tense days. I don’t know why or what’s triggering it, but people are definitely wound up. I could sense it when I can an errand earlier in the day. Most of the time, the tension isn’t expressed, but you can feel it like brewing storm, like a mousetrap that’s set and ready to spring.

I did see a small expression of the tension at one intersection. As a group of us waited on the corner for the walk signal, an elderly lady with an amputated leg approached in a wheelchair. She mumbled unintelligibly while she waved her empty cup, trying to solicit donations. I remember thinking that she was a bit too far out in the traffic lane.

This is when things started to get complicated. A cement truck was coming down the avenue just a couple of feet away from the lady in the wheelchair. The truck driver was trying to make a left turn before the light changed, but he had to hit the brakes, because a cyclist on the cross street had pulled too far out into the intersection. The cement truck driver yelled at the cyclist to get out to the way, but the cyclist held his ground and glared back at him.

The light changed, which meant that the people waiting on the corner could cross, but now the cement truck was blocking the intersection. We couldn’t walk around the front of the truck, because that would put us in the path of crossing traffic. Instead, we had to walk around the back of the truck, which meant squeezing past the mumbling amputated lady in the wheelchair.

What a mess! It made everyone feel even more tense. Be caureful out there!

New York Minute 96 - Running Hot

I stopped by one of my regular coffee places last evening for a latte. When the barista saw me, he said, “Hey! I didn’t know you ran.”

The gears in my head cranked for a moment as I parsed his sentence.

“Oh! You must have seen me while I was jogging this morning.”

“No, it was a couple of weeks ago,” the man recalled. “It was a really hot day. I don’t know how you can run in that heat.”

New York Minute 95 - Swamped Subway

It has been a wet and humid July in New York. Average rainfall for the month is four and a half inches, but this year we’ve had over seven inches with more storms forecast for tomorrow. I can recall only two days this month when the air was not uncomfortably sticky.

As humid as it has been, I’m not sure that the weather was responsible for the moisture that I saw on a subway car this past Tuesday. It looked as though someone had sprayed the interior of the car with a garden hose or several buckets of water.  It had rained heavily though the night; it’s possible that a number of people had come on board with wet umbrellas early in the morning. Combined with condensation from the air conditioning, I could imagine that the interior being quite wet under those conditions. But this was an extreme case. The floor was wet from end to end, and several seats were filled with pools of water.

At one of the stops, a man and his young boy got on the train. Kids move quickly. Before his dad could stop him, the boy dashed over and sat at one of the puddled seats. Fortunately, he was carrying a large backpack, which prevented him from sitting back in the seat. The bottom of the backpack got wet, but the boy’s clothes were okay.

Always be aware of your surroundings when you’re in the subway. Look before you sit.

Fleeting Ideas

There is this moment
It’s so frustrating!
When you think of something
Something important
And you’re just about to
Write it down
Or drop it into thoughtful
Conversation
And then...
POOF!
It dashes away
Out of your head
Out of your mind
Out of your memory
Without so much as a trace.

It’s maddening.
It’s as though the idea
Had been walking toward you
Through a deep, dark wood
On the other side of the railroad tracks
Approaching slowly
Preparing to emerge
And then...
Just at the moment
When it’s finally ready
To reveal itself
WHOOSH!
Along comes a high-speed bullet train
To blow your idea away.

When No One Else Is There

A wide mountain lake

Spans out before me

Tranquil and still

In the chill

Of the morning air

The glasslike surface

Unmoved

By even a ripple

Around the edges stand

Leafless trees

Stoic and stark

Skeletons of bark

Reaching up

From the rocks

Toward a brooding, overcast sky

Soft, pallid light

Held back by the clouds

Muting all colors

On the lake and the ground

Converting all hues

To black and gray

While far, far away

Majestic peaks

Defy the horizon

Here I stand

In this natural place

And here I shall stay

For a while

Bundled up

To endure the cold

Enjoying the quiet

The nurturing calm

The refreshing air

And the soul stimulation

Of remoteness

And isolation

This wondrous place

This lake

The mountains

The smell of the windless air

They touch me

As I stand alone

Forgetting my cares

Detached and aware

Savoring a remarkable calmness

That I haven’t known

For a long, long time

Yes

Here I stand

One small man

Dwarfed

By a vast, untouched landscape

Admiring the view

Embracing the magic

Of solitude

Gazing at nothing

While taking in everything

Experiencing the reverence

And joy

Of communion with nature

I stand in wonder

As I rediscover

Serenity

Surrounding me

Feeling at ease

Completely at ease

In the cold morning air

When no one else is there

Cry Of The Heart

There is no cry
As sad and distraught

Mourning the stoppage
Of time spent together
Sharing a perfect love

Love and Hostility

When faced with the chance

To react with love

Or hostility

Always choose

To be loving

Love demonstrates respect

And self-control

It encourages communication

Connection

And contentment

Hostility may coerce some action

But it won’t yield

Any prize worth keeping

Its gains

Come tarnished with contempt

And cold resentment

A hostile act

Can never be taken back

While You Stood By

Yes
I bring her flowers
Every week
And every day
I find a way
To tell her how much
She means to me
And assure her
That I’ll always be there
To take care of her desires
And needs

If you have someone special
In your life
I suggest that you do the same
Or apply some variation
On the theme
Let them know
That they’re important to you
They’re honored
And loved
And appreciated
And adored
And valued
And cherished
And needed
And treasured
In so many ways
Or you may wake up one day
And find that your true love
Has slipped away
Because they didn’t think
That you cared

They wanted to know
They wanted to hear it
But you didn’t share
You didn’t dare
Break the silence
Of placid assumption
The inertia
Of persistent inaction
And love withered
And withdrew
Taken over by fear
That the one who was near
Didn’t hold them as dear
And those feelings
Once deep
And overwhelming
Disappeared
While you stood by
And did nothing

Remembering The Magic Of Albums

During a recent road trip, I had the chance to listen to a few of my favorite albums end to end. It’s always a joy to find albums that you can appreciate in their entirety instead of skipping over the bad songs and playing only the good ones. Here are some notes on my weekend listening choices including some connections that I hadn’t thought about when I packed them in my suitcase.

The Beatles - Let It Be... Naked

It’s amazing that the “Let It Be” album exists at all. It was recorded as the band was falling apart, intended to be the centerpiece of a film and concert promotion project (read: business people probably came up with the idea), and pieced together after the breakup by a producer whose vision did not match that of the songwriters. The “Naked” version of the album, released in 2003, was meant to undo some of the production decisions that are burned into the version that we have listened to all of these years.

So, someone had this bright idea. Let’s make a film to chronicle The Beatles as they develop and record new material, rehearse the material, and then play it in concert. The project immediately ran into problems. The band hadn’t played live in years. The rehearsal hall was chosen for the benefit of filming, and The Beatles hated it. John was grieving over a personal tragedy and showed little interest in the project. Paul’s efforts to rally his mates were seen as pushy and overbearing. George backed out at one point and wouldn’t return until the live concert idea was taken off of the table. Arguments were tense and performances were half-hearted.

After the band broke up, a tragic day in music history to say the least, the tapes were handed over to producer Phil Spector - yes, the same Phil Spector who was convicted of shooting an actress to death in 2003. Spector had popularized a recording style that became known as the “wall of sound.” He added orchestras and choirs and extra instruments to the arrangements in order to make the recordings wouldn’t full and lush. Not everyone was a fan of his sound or of his impact on the albums that would become known as “Let It Be.”

Paul McCartney hated Spector’s version of the recording and tried unsuccessfully to prevent it from being released. John was more forgiving, noting that Spector had created something listenable out of what John considered to be a bunch of uninspired performances.

The Beatles’ producer George Martin had recorded the original tracks but was not given a production credit on “Let It Be.” Later, he remarked that the credits should have read: “Produced by George Martin; over-produced by Phil Spector.”

Happily, today we have the choice of listening to Spector’s version of “Let It Be” or “Let It Be... Naked” which strips the production down to more fundamental elements.

Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

I love the songs on this album - “The Boxer” and “The Only Living Boy In New York” are two of my all-time favorites - but I find it difficult to listen to this record. I don’t care for the overall sound.

The problem is actually similar to McCartney’s complaint about “Let It Be.” No, Phil Spector did not produce “Bridge Over Troubled Water - it was produced by Simon and Garfunkel themselves along with engineer Roy Halee - but I have a sneaking suspicion that they were trying create the Phil Spector sound. Listen to the almost overwhelming orchestra sounds in “The Boxer” and the title track to see what I mean.

If the Phil Spector sound rubs you the wrong way, imitation Phil Spector is even worse. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is full of great songs. It deserves a “naked” version.

Stone Temple Pilots - Core

“Let It Be” was the last Beatles album. “Core” was the first Stone Temple Pilots album. What does that mean? Absolutely nothing. Forget that I mentioned it.

But don’t forget, as I had, sadly, that “Core” is full of amazing songs, songs that helped to define the “grunge” sound of 1990s, just as The Beatles helped to define the sound of the 1960s and usher in “the British Invasion.”

There are so many great songs on this album, and young Scott Weiland’s voice just soars through the whole CD. My only complaint is that a couple of the songs run a little long, but that was part of the grunge ethos. - What’s the hurry? It’s not as though we have to get up and go to work in the morning. Now, let’s do some stage diving!

Pennsylvania Travelogue - 16 July 2018

At a rest stop on the Pennsylvania turnpike, as I sat in my car in the parking lot waiting for a minor traffic snarl to clear, I noticed an elderly couple walking out from the main building. The lady was dressed in traditional Amish garb, a plain blue dress with a white lace apron and lace cap. The man’s outfit was plain, as well, but not as closely typed to the community. If had seen him walking by himself, I would not have know that he was Amish. He wasn’t wearing a hat, and his clothing more more standard.

As they passed my car - I was stuck there for a while waiting for someone to figure out how to back out of a parking space - I noticed that an artificial hand protruded from the man’s right shirtsleeve, a stainless metal hook with one or two articulating, opposing “fingers.” It struck me that this was particularly unusual for someone from a culture that shuns modern technology. That said, I’m glad that the man made the decision to be fitted with the hand. I’m sure that it has made a difference in the quality of his life.

Accepting Compliments

Never hesitate to accept an honest compliment. If the person means what they’re saying sincerely, appreciate the generosity of their spirit and let their kind words lift you up and make you feel special. They will feel special, too, because they took a risk to say what they did, and you accepted their gift with appreciation.

Life is tough. We need those little “high fives” to help us keep going. Accept a compliment like money in the bank, and then pay it forward with interest by complimenting others.

When you compliment someone, you make them feel terrific, and you leave the world a little better off than it was at the start of the day, a happier, warmer, more joyful planet, a place where people feel comfortable being who they really are because they are accepted and appreciated by others.

Appreciate July

Winter lasts for five months.

July lasts for four weeks.

Appreciate July.

New York Minute 94 - Commuting Decisions

Yes, the subways were running with delays again this morning.

Yes, I went back up to street level and found one of the few available taxis.

Yes, the cab got stuck in traffic almost immediately.

No, the cab did not have air conditioning.

Yes, the cab driver was eating chicken while I was riding with him.

Yes, he did floss his teeth when he finished the chicken.

Yes, he did floss his teeth a second time at the next red signal.

Yes, I did pay with a credit card because I didn’t want to hand him money and have him had me back change with his dirty hands.

Yes, I would have arrived sooner and paid one fifth the price if I had just waited for the delayed subway.

Yes, the whole ordeal did leave me feeling sick to my stomach.

New York Minute 93 - Ice Cream Adventure

When you’re out and about on a hot summer day, it’s natural to think about cooling off with some delicious ice cream. You walk to the nearest grocery store only to discover that the ice cream there isn’t on sale, and at full price, it’s rather expensive.

You remember that another store in the area is running a sale. Even in the intense heat and humidity, you don’t mind walking a couple of extra blocks to save some money. So, you hike over to the other store, walk into the cool, air conditioned comfort on the other side of the sliding glass doors, and pick up a hand basket for toting your purchases. As you walk thought the tranquil mini rain forest that is the produce section, you notice a small rat dash across the aisle a few meters ahead of you.

In that moment, you realize how grateful you are that ice cream is sold in sealed packages.

New York Minute 92 - Jaywalking For Two

I felt a jolt of panic when I looked up and noticed a very pregnant woman walking slowly across a wide avenue and against the light. She was in the crosswalk, but the traffic, which was approaching rapidly, had the right away. Onward she plodded, step by unhastened step, blissfully unaware of the cars and buses that were headed in her direction.

Somehow, she managed to make it safely to the other side before the vehicles reached the intersection. Why anyone would take such a foolish risk is beyond all comprehension.

New York Minute 91 - Bag Overboard

Trash stinks. But when large piles of garbage bags sit out in the sweltering summer sun waiting for the Sanitation Department to come along and collect them, their inherent rancidity is amplified to an intensely putrid level. Welcome to New York in July, a place that’s not well-suited for the faint of nose.

The other morning, on a day when the mercury was forecasted to push into the high nineties Fahrenheit, I walked past as one of the Sanitation Engineers tossed a pile of bags, one by one, into the back of a smelly, rusty truck. As the man walked on to the next stack of bags, one of the bags that he had just picked up rolled off of the back of the truck and into the street.

I thought about calling out to the guy, but he was already halfway down the block. I doubt if he wanted to retrace his steps. The tumbled sack faced one of two potential outcomes. Either it would bake in the heat for another day, or some vehicle would collide with it and spread its rancid contents far and wide. I cursed my indecision, but the garbage man was now a block away, and I didn’t relish the thought of him cursing at me.
