Darkness

As a photographer, I find darkness fascinating. It's the perfect canvas against which I can project the light of my own choosing. The soft light from the low December sun is equally pregnant with possibilities. December, the Dark Month, is one of my favorite times of year.

As a composer, I find darkness comforting. It allows me to tune out unlimited distractions of the visual world and focus on the feelings in my heart.

As a writer, I find darkness inspiring. I'm drawn to the emotional depth and complexity of obscure situations, dark characters, and the dark motives that simmer beneath the most ordinary lives.

As a runner, I associate darkness with cooler, quieter hours of the day, when traffic is light, pedestrians are few, and the heat of the sun has subsided.

Darkness is beautiful, moving, exhilarating. Everywhere I go, at any time of day, I'm always sure to carry some with me.
