Everyone assumes that they could land a plane if the pilot became ill, but no one imagines that they could complete open heart surgery if the doctor collapsed.

When someone says, “We can stay open. Our hospitals have capacity,” what they mean is, “The community won’t be overwhelmed by corpses, so let’s have some more death!”

Not wearing a mask because cases are low is like not wearing a seatbelt because nobody in your town crashed yesterday.

Not wearing a mask because you have rights is like leaving grandma in a hot car because she has a right to enjoy the sunshine.

Knowledge and expertise are convenient scapegoats for populist leaders and demagogues. Who needs the benefit of reason when you’re whipping crowds into a frenzy with fear and division and greed? When the people start thinking, demagoguery loses its appeal.
