New York Minute 115 - Thoughtful Pedestrians

After nearly crashing into a lady on the sidewalk during a run a couple of weeks ago (New York Minute 113), I was delighted to encounter a couple of thoughtful pedestrians during my run the other evening. One young lady was crossing Lexington Avenue at a crosswalk. Despite the fact that a large taxi cab was situated between us, she was aware that I was coming - I was aware of her, too, so there was no danger of a crash in this instance - and she paused to let me pass through.

A second lady, a bit older and nicely dressed, was crossing Park Avenue wearing sunglasses. Keep in mind that it was nine o’clock at night. I didn’t think that she would see me coming, but she did, and she paused to let me pass. I had plenty of time to come to a stop, so I let her go by before the signal changed and let the traffic come through. She seemed genuinely tickled that a runner would stop and let her pass. She smiled and said, “Thanks!”

I did encounter one gentleman who checked traffic and then jaywalked right in front of me as I was nearing the end of my run. I had some warning, so it wasn’t difficult to maneuver around him. But the two ladies impressed me with their awareness. They renewed my faith in human nature.
