Obstruction of Justice

It's almost May, and Judge Merrick Garland has not had a Senate hearing. No hearing is scheduled. No one is even talking about scheduling a hearing for Judge Garland.

This delay is criminal. Members of the U.S. Senate are guilty of a crime. That crime is called obstruction of justice.

The Justice Department should send Federal Marshals to arrest any senator who is accused of obstruction. The senators can appoint a temporary replacement while they prepare their defense in court. If the replacements obstruct justice, the too should be arrested.

The U.S. Constitution lays out a framework through which our elected officials govern the country, not for AVOIDING governance. If someone can collect a salary with benefits and an outrageously generous retirement package, that person should be required to do their job, leave their job, or be held responsible for the consequences of not doing their job.

Do you job, Senate. Get up off of your spoiled, overpaid buttocks and do your job.

Etiquette for Gentlemen - The Elevator

Gentlemen, when the elevator stops and the doors open, wait inside and let the ladies walk out of the car ahead of you.

This practice has several advantages.

1. The ladies will feel respected. You will impress upon them that you are aware of their needs and that you are willing to make sacrifices for them.

2. In the event of gunfire or explosions, the ladies can act as human shields as you plan your evasive maneuvers and prepare to launch a counter attack.

3. If no violence/projectiles are present, you can still enjoy looking at the ladies' bottoms as they walk away from you. They won't mind, because they already feel honored and respected courtesy of your selfless chivalry.

4. If the ladies delay your progress by walking too slowly, you can rely on your superior speed and strength to push past them and leave them in a cloud of dust.

Remember that a gentleman always thinks of the lady first, and thinks of himself the rest of the time.

:-)

The Strange and the Wicked

Child abusers do their best to fit in. Their crime requires that they be accepted and trusted within their community. They'll do everything in their power to convince you that they are stable and responsible.

Trust the strange people instead, the ones who don't conform or attempt to fit in. When you're with an openly eccentric person, at least you know who you're dealing with.

Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina

Ah! Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina make such a cute couple, don't they? They're perfect for each other, so perfect that I'd actually like to watch them sixty-nine each other - for about 43 seconds with a barf bag in hand, purely for the comedic value.

Then, after washing up with river water from Flint Michigan, this fine example of "strange bedfellows" can depart from whatever fleabag hotel their campaign can still afford, ride off into the sunset and disappear forever and ever and ever. Or just move to North Korea, where they would fit in.

Good luck, Ted and Carly! May your adventures be enjoyable and mercifully short-lived. And please don't ever run for President again, either of you. Every time I look at those faces or hear the words that come out of your mouths, my stomach dies a little bit.

The Real World

When you're a kid, people go out of their way to make your experiences as fair, fun, and reasonable as possible. Then you enter the real world, where inexplicable and borderline insane things happen all the time, and where people who should care just don't. Thank heaven for a sense of humor.

United Shades of America

I have been wanting to comment on W. Kamau Bel's CNN show from Sunday night (United Shades of America). Bel interviewed and spent time time with a certain well known American hate organization that isn't too fond of people his his (ahem) complexion.

I feel that there's a lot to say in this topic; I just haven't fully been able to wrap my head around the experience of watching it. It was a good show but rather overwhelming in its shock value.

I will say this: Mr. Bel has some serious balls. He must have cajones the size of grapefruit to volunteer for that assignment. Lord Almighty! That took guts.

Good Days and Bad Days

I have good days and bad days. I'm only human.

But occasionally, if I'm feeling poorly or I'm under an unusual amount of stress, I'll experience a really, really bad day. A catastrophically bad day. A Tyrannosaurus Rex day.

This past Thursday, I was a living, breathing tyrannosaur.

When I returned to Starbucks on Monday morning, the barista looked at me with great concern asked whether I was okay.

I said, yes, that I was feeling better, and explained that I was going through a really rough day when I had last visited the store.

"We've never SEEN you like that before!"

Luckily, it doesn't happen very often.

The Challenge and Reward of Being Present

Is it fair to scold children for not paying attention? How many adults do you know who can remain focused and resist distraction for even a short period of time?

The next time you're in a meeting or attending a presentation, notice how many people give their full attention and focus to the discussion. How many will check their mobile phones at some point? How many will pull out a laptop or a tablet to do some work (or casual browsing) instead of focusing on the matter that's being discussed?

It's not just technology that distracts us. People get caught up in their own thoughts, or they become distracted by the actions of others.

Sometimes, we'll hear people mention the concept of being present, suggesting that we be aware and "live in the moment." If you have heard these terms and thought "worthless self-help nonsense," I don't blame you. Ideas like this come with a certain amount of skeptical baggage. Introspection and self awareness are not well understood in Western society.

But let's be clear on one point. Presence, focus, and clarity aren't optional "nice to haves" with which we can look forward to experimenting when we find some extra time. Being focused is a powerful technique; it helps us to make the most out of almost any situation.

Suggestions For Heightened Awareness

Notice things. In any given moment, we ignore much of what's happening around us. In order to become more focused and aware, we need to force ourselves to break the habit of shutting out the world. Wherever your are right now, think about everything that you hear. Notice things that you weren't hearing thirty seconds ago. Notice what you can see, feel, and smell. Engage your senses to the fullest (this is fun!). Be there, be aware, and notice as much as you possibly can.

Listen. When someone speaks, listen. Focus on every word and every idea. Focus on the tone and pace of their voice. Focus on their posture and body language. Focus on the greater they are attempting to convey with their words.

Participate. Be active and engaging in conversations and situations. That doesn't mean being impolite, disruptive, or overbearing. It means engaging in partnership with others and in concert with your surroundings.

Reflect. Think about how your feel about things as you live from moment to moment. How does what's happening outside of your body impact your inner being. Your inner self never stops listening, never stops noticing things. You might have trained yourself to subdue certain emotional reactions, to forge ahead with a stiff upper lip. That conditioning can help you to navigate stressful and challenging situations. But your inner being still feels a certain way about things. It's important to acknowledge those feelings to yourself, even when, for various reasons, we have to keep them hidden from others. Try to be aware of how you feel about things as often as you can.

Decide. Make a conscious decision to be present, even when doing to is difficult. Notice whether this makes a difference in how you experience the world and in how the world responds to you. Focus. Concentrate. Remind yourself to establish and maintain awareness in a variety of situations. To be fully aware is to be fully alive. Don't cheat yourself out of a minute of your life by staggering through it in blissful unawareness. Experience life fully by being present in each moment. Remind yourself regularly to maintain this awareness even as you navigate through a demanding schedule.

Be kind to yourself and to others. Being supportive of others requires an awareness of their needs, their tastes, and their feelings. Being kind to yourself requires that same level of awareness directed inwardly. Remind yourself that being present is challenging. You won't be able to manage it all of the time. Do your best, but relax and give yourself a much deserved break anytime you need it. Kindness is the ultimate honor. Pay that honor to yourself and to others whenever you can.

New Jersey Politics

Some people claim that Governor Christie threw his political cronies under the bus. Luckily, the bus was on the George Washington Bridge, so it wasn't moving.

Wide Stance

This actually happened today.

There are four urinals in the men's room:

A B C D

A was occupied. C was occupied, as well, but the guy's legs were spread so widely that it would have been very uncomfortable to use position B or D.

I decided to head toward the stalls.

A Reckoning for Capitalism and Socialism

People tend to view capitalism and socialism in black and white terms. In the US, we were conditioned to believe that capitalism could do no wrong as long as you didn't do anything to get in its way. And in the long run, socialism would never contribute anything useful to society because it works against human nature.

Looking back on it, we realize that those civics lessons were written by capitalists and their apologists. They wanted us to avoid dismantling their convenient profit machine, and we fell for it.

Capitalism did have the occasional good run, as in first 20 years after WWII, but eventually it tends to get drunk on self-adulation to the point where it throws more gutter balls than strikes.

Look at Detroit. Look at Cleveland. Look at the real take-home pay of working class American families. The capitalists have shaved every possible penny away from investment and benefits and wages and put it into their personal war chests. Granted, capitalism has contributed a lot to American society, but it has reached the point where the cost of capitalism - capitalism drunk with power and greed - has almost outweighed its positive value.

I'm not suggesting that we overthrow capitalism; that would cause more problems than it would fix. But it's time to manage capitalism instead of letting it run wild like a group of intoxicated frat boys looking to exploit virgin territory in the women's dormitory.

Work Hard

Work hard.

Work harder than hard.

Work like a maniac, and keep at it. Keep going!

When you work hard, you accomplish things - small things at first, but bigger and more impressive things as you keep pushing forward.

Your accomplishments are your own. No one can take away the fact that you did something special, that you created something meaningful. And no one can take away the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a project that's important to you.

Work hard.

When you work hard you gain skills. You gain knowledge. You gain experience and expertise. When a situation arises that demands that level of expertise, the person who worked the hardest will shine.

Work hard.

If no one notices, who cares? You'll notice.

If no one rewards you, who cares? A job well done is its own reward.

If no one appreciates your efforts, who cares?

In the end, how YOU feel about your life is more important than how anyone else feels about it.

New York Minute 28 - Falling Down Drunk

He seemed fine as he J-walked across 46th Street with a friend - slender young guy, boyish face, close-cropped orange hair. He must have misjudged the height of the curb as he tried to step onto the sidewalk.

Boom! Down he went! He landed on his chest. It looked for a moment as though he might practice the breast stroke right there on the concrete.

His friend helped him back onto his feet. He staggered like a dazed scarecrow.

This poor guy probably won't remember much of this St. Patrick's Day. He will remember the hangover.
