Last night, I came home late on the subway. A man got up from his seat to depart at one of the stops. The man who had been sitting beside him called out to get his attention, but the man walked off the train. Other passengers joined in until the departing man turned around.
The man had dropped several bills of money on the seat. The rider who had initially called for his attention held the bills in an outstretched hand. The man came back onto the train and retrieved his money.
Difficult people and unfortunate events demand our attention, but the world is full of good, thoughtful people, people who help others without a second thought.
I had just missed the previous train and had to wait several minutes for this one to come along. I was grumbling to myself over this waste of time, but I'm glad that it happened. I'm glad that I was there to witness someone help someone else unselfishly. It's easy to become cynical. My soul needed to be reminded that most people really are good at heart.
