A Healthy Disrespect for Standards

I appreciate standards, and I understand the need for standardization in engineering, medicine, and other disciplines.

But I also maintain a healthy disrespect for standards and for people who insist that I follow them. I might have a better idea, and I'm willing to break with convention in order to give that idea a try.

If standards were so wonderful, no one would ever have to innovate or invent new ways of doing things.

Standards have their place. Just don't insist that I follow them - or be prepared to defend your position.
