Angry People With Guns

Is there any limit to senseless misery caused by angry people with guns? This morning, a reporter and a cameraman were shot dead on live TV. Earlier this week, a deputy was killed by a man that he stopped to help. A few weeks ago, a nut walked into a Louisiana theater and started shooting indiscriminately.

This doesn't happen in isolation. Anti-government, pro-violence rhetoric stirs these people up. It's time to consider holding people accountable when they foment aggressive behavior. Our society is full of human time bombs ticking and waiting to go off.

There Was This One Guy

There was this one guy - every time people talk about him, the story begins with "there was this one guy."

Be that guy.

A Healthy Disrespect for Standards

I appreciate standards, and I understand the need for standardization in engineering, medicine, and other disciplines.

But I also maintain a healthy disrespect for standards and for people who insist that I follow them. I might have a better idea, and I'm willing to break with convention in order to give that idea a try.

If standards were so wonderful, no one would ever have to innovate or invent new ways of doing things.

Standards have their place. Just don't insist that I follow them - or be prepared to defend your position.

Bad Ideas That You Might Want To Avoid

Never let your wife hang around with someone named Phil Anders. Never do that. It's just a bad idea. Why take the chance?

Also, never let her consult alone with an attorney who claims to do a lot of "pro bono" work. That should raise a big red flag - and even if it raises a little one, it still could cause trouble.

New York Minute 15 - Comedy Club Come On

I walked through Times Square after work today. A guy approached and asked whether I wanted to see a comedy show.

I said, "Oh, no thanks! I've already heard all of the jokes."

You should have seen the look on the guy's face. He's probably going to use that line in his act tonight.

In The Path Of Donald Trump

All of a sudden, John Bush looks like a deer in the headlights.

"Hey, I thought that this was supposed to be MY road!" thinks Deer John a split second before Donald Trump's limousine runs him flat and puts him out of the race for good.

Does the Second Amendment Support Armed Insurrection?

Does the Second Amendment to the Constitution support armed resistance against the U.S. Government? Some people, even constitutional scholars, tend to have strong opinions on this topic. I'll present my argument below, but first, let's examine the actual text of the amendment.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Observation 1 - The amendment states that militias are "necessary to the security of a free State." Whether that remains true today is a matter for debate, but it was a reasonable position in the late Eighteenth Century. The new nation of the United States of America had plenty of enemies. They had just won independence from Great Britain, but King George was not ready to take no for an answer. Britain waged two more wars with the former colonies before they finally accepted their independence.

Hostile natives were also a threat to the citizens of the new nation, although admittedly, that threat worked both ways. And let's face it - we were broke. Armies cost money, and we didn't have much money.

Under these conditions, militias were vital to the security of the state. But that does not imply that the militias were there to turn on the government. They were seen as protectors of the state, not as revolutionaries in waiting. Militias were considered "necessary to the security" of the State, not as a reset button on an unpopular government.

Observation 2 - The amendment speaks in favor of well regulated militias, not renegades with guns. Who regulates the militias? The State. Why would the State regulate militias that had intentions of overthrowing the government? It doesn't make sense. Armed citizens were expected to protect the State, not to overthrow it.

Observation 3 - It's not reasonable to believe that the architects of our system of government would embed language encouraging the overthrow of that government. Jefferson and Adams didn't say, "Hey, let's let the citizens keep arms in case we overstep our authority." The Constitution was designed to put representative power into the hands of the people in hopes that armed insurrection would not be necessary. If we don't like our representatives, we vote for someone else. There's no reason to assassinate people when you can simply vote them out of office.

Armed insurrection was not seen as a solution, especially by people who had just lived through one. The solution that they proposed was a government based on stability and accountability, on a balance of power that could be altered freely by the electorate on a regular schedule.

Nevertheless, the plan was not foolproof. We did have our armed insurrection. It was called the Civil War, the deadliest war in our nation's history in terms of American casualties. That conflict resulted in the type of carnage that Jefferson and Adams were trying to avoid. Hopefully, in the future, we'll settle our differences at the ballot box instead of in the trenches of armed conflict. Our Constitution does not suggest or support armed insurrection despite what some conspiracy theorists might want to believe.

Meme Filter Wanted

Facebook and Google Plus need a meme filter.

I enjoy reading about your day, your insights, your opinions on hot topics. I don't mind looking at pictures of your child, your pet, your friends, your dinner, or your new haircut.

But I don't like having my news feed flooded with graphic slogans no matter how clever or touching the message.

People who send lots and lots of this junk eventually end up on my Do Not Follow list, not because I don't care about them, but because I don't have enough hours of free time to sort though pre-canned spam in order to find the real messages that people post. Sorry to be a curmudgeon about this. I'm just a busy person. :-)

Goals, Risks, and Rewards

A goal is more than a plan to reach a stated objective.

A goal is the launching point of a journey.

If you undertake that journey and follow it to its conclusion, you'll gain more than they outcome that you sought initially.

Follow your goal, and you will become stronger, wisermore skilled, more experienced, more resourceful, more resilientmore focused, more capable, more content, more fulfilled, and more ALIVE than you would have been if you had decided to take the safe route and do nothing.

Does setting a goal seem frightening or intimidating? Some apprehension is natural. What if you fail? What if you're not up to the task? What if you fall flat on your face and everyone laughs at you?

Criticism is painful, but you can endure it. Missing your expectations and the expectations of others can be devastatingly uncomfortable, but you'll survive and you'll be stronger for the experience.

No one succeeds without failing along the way. No one. The people whom we recognize as great successes didn't magically have all of the right answers when they started their journey. They failed repeatedly, and they were criticized mercilessly every time one of their ideas didn't work. They dealt with it and kept going, just as you will.

Give yourself the freedom to try something that might not work. If the only risk that you're willing to take is a sure bet, you'll never get very far. Sometimes, you have to take a chance on the long shot, the dark horse, the big payoff. If that horse stumbles, jump on another horse, and another. Each time, you'll learn lessons that you could never have learned without taking that risk.

A goal provides us with the opportunity to reap two rewards, our stated objective and the challenging but life affirming journey that leads to it. You might not reach that objective. You might need to reassess and recalibrate your trajectory and set new goals. But you won't know which way to go until you have taken the journey.

Eventually, you'll meet up with the rewards that were meant to come into your life, precious, bountiful treasures that reflect who you are and what you were willing to work for along the way. Everyone's journey is unique, as unique as the rewards that await you if you're willing to take the steps to reach them.

Federal Funding of Abortions and Other Distortions

The latest "buzz" is that federal money (I.e. your taxes) is being used to fund abortions. This, of course, is a lie. They Hyde Amendment has prevented federal funding of abortion since the 1970's.

No federal money is used to fund abortions. None. Zero. Nada. Public policy decisions should not be based on ignorance, propaganda, or lies. But people with an agenda love to tell lies and spread propaganda. And people who don't actively seek the truth often make decisions based on ignorance. Don't let that happen to you.

New York Minute 14 - Garbage Night

Walking down the sidewalk on a sultry, steamy August evening, trash bags piled high awaiting their early morning pick up. That's an odor that will linger with you for a while.
